Modules

The CliFiT4SE toolkit comprises three training modules and six interactive tools that allow delving into the most important climate finance issues. It is available in English, French, and Spanish.

Setting the Scene on Climate Finance

The introductory module of the CliFiT4SE toolkit aims at making participants familiar with climate change related concepts and the respective terminology. Participants are guided through the key concepts of climate science, the international climate change regime and related policies as well as the international climate finance landscape. Participants are also introduced to the Green Climate Fund (GCF), outlining the key concepts and procedures such as investment criteria, resource allocation or project requirements.

The introductory module also comprises several interactive elements such as puzzles or quizzes and guiding questions to reflect on the contents. For each of the three sector-specific toolkits, specific sector information is included that relates to each of the sub-topics mentioned above (e.g. GCF sector-specific portfolio).

Climate Rationale

The modules of Climate Rationale comprise three tools that enable participants to refine their project ideas and make them fit for climate finance opportunities. Each tool familiarizes participants with the topic and the tool by introducing an exemplary, sector-specific case. Training sessions generally follow the structure „Introduction of the tool with a case (water, agriculture or transport sector) – Practical work with the tool – Presentation and Reflection of group work“. The trainer can vary this sequence according to the level of knowledge of the participants and the group dynamics.

Impact chains: Establishing a climate change impact chain is a vital analytical tool and first step in examining the status quo and understanding climate-related risks and opportunities related to your potential project idea or concept. The tool also helps to identify and analyse the climate relevant aspects of your project idea or concept.

Mitigation pathways: Gaining an understanding of current levels of emissions, emission trajectories and emissions trends at both the national and sectoral levels provides the necessary basis for understanding how your potential project idea or concept can contribute to reducing emissions. The tool also helps to identify possible decarbonisation pathways for achieving emission reductions and considering the mobility needs of people and potential social and environmental impacts.

Climate project design: Project design depends on identifying solutions to address the causes and resolve the problems of climate change impacts in your sector, activity or region. Successful project design supports the later project implementation. This tool will guide you through the problem analysis and how to formulate a project design based on this problem analysis.

Implementation Structure

The modules of Implementation Structure comprise three tools that enable participants to refine their project ideas and make them fit for climate finance opportunities.

Partnership development: This tool supports you in identifying relevant partners for your project and equips you with the necessary knowledge and actions to develop these partnerships. By clearly setting out the project actors involved and their strategic importance and resources, the tool empowers you to actively manage and expand your partnership in an efficient way.

Framework alignment: Framework alignment entails identification of relevant policies, plans, strategies and schemes/programmes that can affect or be affected by your climate change projects.

Funding Strategy & Instruments: This tool guides you in formulating a funding strategy for your project or programme. Specifically, it helps to quantify the funding needs for the project‘s activities and determine which financing instruments and actors are best suitable for the project and how to communicate this to the financial institution.
